Namkeen Seviyan (Savouri Vermicelli)

Namkeen Seviyan (Savouri Vermicelli) is a delicious breakfast dish. It is also known as Jawe. Seviyan can also be served as snack or light dinner. This is a healthy recipe as it has a lot of vegetables.

I have used cashews to add some crunch and raisins to add sweet and sour taste to the dish. Cashews and Raisins take this dish a notch higher and are a must for the dish. To get bust of flavors in every bite, make this dish by following simple and easy steps given below. Sometimes also called as Seviyan Upma or Vermicelli Upma.

Ingredients for Namkeen Seviyan

200 grams sewai (vermicelli)
2 carrots julienned
1 cup cauliflower
1 green slit
1 tablespoon ginger chopped fine
2 tablespoon coriander chopped fine
½ cup green peas
1 tablespoon lemon juice
2 tablespoon kismis (raisins)
2 tablespoon kaju (cashew)
½ teaspoon pepper powder
½ teaspoon chilli
¼ teaspoon haldi
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 teaspoon roasted cumin powder
1 teaspoon rai (mustard)
1 teaspoon jeera (cumin)
½ teaspoon black salt
2 to 3 tablespoon tomato ketchup
2 bay leaves
4 cloves
2 cardamoms
1 mace
Salt to taste
2 tablespoon oil
4 to 5 cups of boiling water

Directions for Namkeen Seviyan

  • Roast the vermicelli in ½ teaspoon oil and set aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan and fry the cashew, drain and set aside.
  • In the same pan add mustard, cumin, bay leaves, cloves and cardamoms.
  • Add cauliflower and green chilli, saute and cover, cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Now add carrot, green peas, ginger and mix.
  • Cover and cook till the vegetables are half-cooked.
  • Add all the dry masalas and saute for a minute.
  • Now add the roasted vermicelli and mix.
  • Add the kismis, tomato ketchup and water.
  • Stir and when it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover and cook till all the water is absorbed.
  • Check for the vermicelli to be cooked or else add little more water.
  • Add the lemon juice, half coriander and half cashew and mix.
  • Serve garnished with rest of coriander and cashew.

Note: Instead of tomato ketchup you can add grated tomatoes.
