Tamatar Ka Aachar (Tomato Pickle)

Tamatar Ka Aachar (Tomato Pickle) is very delicious pickle recipe. This achar (Pickle, Chutney) is easy to make and can be prepared in no time. This achar is fully cooked and so can be consumed instantly unlike so many other pickles which need to be kept for some days till they are ready to be used.

This is a spicy pickle with tangy flavor, made using tomatoes and can be store for quite a long time. Tomato pickle has a tangy flavour and serves great as a side dish recipe.

I have lots of cherry tomato growing in my balcony garden, so have used cherry tomatoes but you can make it with any ripe tomatoes.

Ingredients for Tamatar ka Aachar

500 gm cherry tomatoes
1 tablespoon ginger chopped
2 red or green chilies chopped
10 cloves garlic peeled
1 lemon size tamarind washed
1 teaspoon jeera
1/4 teaspoon methi seeds
1 tablespoon saunf
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1/4 teaspoon hing
1 tablespoon Kashmiri chilli powder
1/3 teaspoon haldi
2 dry red chilli
4 springs of curry leaves
2+2 tablespoon mustard / sesame oil
Salt to taste

Directions for Tamatar ka Aachar

  • Wash the tomatoes well and transfer on a towel to dry. The tomatoes should be absolutely dry before using.
  • Dry roast jeera, methi and saunf on low flame. Grind this mixture to a coarse powder and set aside.
  • Grind ginger, garlic and chilies to a coarse paste. Set aside.
  • Heat 2 tablespoon oil in a pan; add mustard seeds and let them crackle.
  • Add hing, ginger garlic paste and saute till there is no moisture.
  • Now add half curry leaves, red chilies and saute.
  • Now add chilli powder, haldi and toss.
  • Add in the tomatoes, salt and toss to mix.
  • Add tamarind and stir; cover and cook till the tomatoes are mushy.
  • Add rest of curry leaves, ground powder, sugar and cook for 2 minutes. Switch off the heat.
  • Let the pickle come to room temperature.
  • Now add the vinegar, give a good mix and transfer in a dry clean glass bottle.
