Samo aur Kele ka Paratha (Falahari Paratha)

Gluten-free recipe for fasting days. Samo Aur kele Ka Paratha (Falahari Paratha) is a delicious bread often made during fasting days of Navratri, Janamashtmi, Shivratri and Ekadashi. Samo rice and raw banana paratha is a good replacement for Singada or Kuttu ka paratha or poori. This paratha is soft and flavorful. It is quite easy to prepare and needs few ingredients. This low calorie, nutritious recipe is quite filling and comforting.

Samo is also known as Samvat ke chawal, sanwa, moraiyo, Shyama, oodalu, Barnyard millet to name a few. The millet is tiny, round and white and bigger in size then semolina. It tastes similar to rice when cooked and hence it is known as Vrat ke chawal also.

Barnyard millet is rich source of fibre and low in calorie. It is a good source of iron, protien and provides essential nutrients, minerals & vitamins. With all the goodness packed in these tiny seeds; they should not be restricted to fasting days only.

What do I need to make this nutritious and healthy Paratha?

    • Samo / Barnyard millet: Ready made samo flour or you can grind the samo rice at home and sieve it.
    • Raw banana/ Potato: I have used boiled raw banana but can be easily replaced by boiled potato.
    • Seasoning: Fresh chopped coriander, ginger, and red chilli. If you cant find fresh red chilli then use chilli flakes/ powder.
    • Ghee: we use only ghee during fasting. You can use oil also.

Recipe Tips

  • Seive the samo flour if grinding at home.
  • Mash the banana/potato nicely. No lumps should be there.
  • Season as per you liking.
  • Do not keep the dough for long as it will become watery  and difficult to roll.
  • Ghee gives a better taste then oil. It is healthier also.
